The Harvard Polo Club

A Spring Update

At the beginning of April all of our ponies have returned from South Carolina to colder weather than they were anticipating, but they are getting in shape for spring and summer activities. With the full string back at Hamilton farm we are gearing up for our spring JV and Varsity competitions against GW, Brown, and Cal Poly.

Over the winter the women’s team traveled to California where they had a great weekend with the Cal Poly team to prepare for regionals. They competed in the regional tournament at Cornell in mid-March and defeated UConn to make it to regional finals for the first time in program history. Their official season ended in a well-fought final game against Cornell, but they are looking forward to a couple of fun spring games at Myopia! Four senior women will graduate in May.

The men’s varsity team competed in the preliminary regional tournament at Yale in February. They won their first game against Yale, but were not victorious in the final versus Skidmore. Two senior men will graduate in May.

Overall, the ponies and farm are looking great and the team is enjoying our spring trips to the barn. Hope to see you all at Myopia for our spring and summer matches, please check our schedule for more details!

Midseason Update

As the leaves begin to change here in Cambridge, the Harvard Polo club is looking towards the 4th weekend of the intercollegiate polo season. The women's team has had a very successful run against a succession of opponents (UMiami,  Skidmore, UMass, UConn) , effectively sweeping the competition. The men's team recently triumphed over UPenn at their match on  Saturday, October 28th. The JV team also has had some phenomenal success, recently winning their very first game against Virginia Tech.

Summer Polo Overseas

For the 7th year in a row, the Harvard Polo Team traveled overseas in 2017 to participate in summer polo tournaments and match games. Just after graduation, a mixed team with six varsity players embarked to the British Isles for four games over five days on unfamiliar horses. The team played a warmup against a British Household Army team before competing in the Atlantic Cup tournament versus Oxford, Cambridge, and Yale on successive days.  With 2 wins and a loss, the team came in runner-up to Oxford.  On the successive weekend Harvard Polo moved on to Chantilly, France for the 5th annual match against a graduate team from the French university, Science Po.  In mid July, a mixed undergrad/grad team was the fourth Harvard team to travel to China for the 4th annual Intervarsity Polo Tournament hosted by the Metropolitan Polo Club in Tianjin.  Harvard again had a 2 win, 1 loss record against London, Oxford and UConn, again recording a a 2-1 record as runner-up to Oxford.

This fall, Harvard will try to balance the record with Oxford by hosting the English team for a match game on Sunday, Sep 17 at Myopia Hunt Club in South Hamilton, Ma  before the opening of its Fall 2017 intercollegiate schedule. In previous years, Harvard Polo has hosted teams from The Netherlands, Mongolia, France and an All Stars with players from Singapore, Turkey, Italy and France in this Adam Winthrop Memorial game.
