The Harvard Polo Club is funded primarily by the generosity of Harvard alumni. From being re-born in 2006 with a small group of dedicated players to a full 20-member team with a string of 18 horses in 2012, the team has achieved impressive growth through its formative years. However, for continued growth and sustainability, further and continued funding is vital.
As the only equestrian-related organization at the university, the Harvard Polo Club offers a rare and extraordinary experience to the undergraduate community. Due to the funding of alumni and like supporters, members' dues are largely subsidized, allowing a broader subset of the Harvard population to partake in the program, regardless of financial concerns.
The Harvard Polo Club not only offers students a fun, physical activity; it also it offers the unique opportunity for the player to learn to adapt his game to the horse. From learning to care for and play on our four-legged teammates, polo players learn invaluable skills that - for a college student - offer the opportunity to learn a simultaneous lesson about life. Because each horse is unique, polo players are forced to constantly leave their comfort zones, think on the fly, and learn situation adaptation skills that can only be found in a sport like polo where every hit at the ball is the culmination of not only physical practice, but also communication with a living, thinking animal. In the past six years, the team has trained over forty undergraduates, each of whom had never held a polo mallet before college. After graduating, all reflected positively on their time with the team, as did past men's captain, Albany Mulholland '12; "In the past four years, 16 Harvard polo ponies have taught me more than 32 Harvard University professors."
As players and students we relish the opportunities that Harvard Polo has given us and appreciate the generosity of those who have made these experiences possible. Donations contribute to cementing our program's longevity by acquiring a stable, arena, and additional ponies, as well as defraying operating costs related to the upkeep of our current string of incredible equine athletes.
If you are interested in donating to the team, please Contact Us or send a check made payable to Friends of Harvard Polo to:
